Twitter Contest: Battlefield 3 and Act of Valor

Published in Daily News Written by Widowmaker
A few weeks ago a trailer was released for Act of Valor and much of the Internet commented that it looks like an unofficial Call of Duty/Battlefield movie. Seems like the film's creators were thinking the same thing. Right now they're offering visitors to get exclusive Battlefield 3 dog tags on the Act of Valor website.
Through the wonders of the Animus, you can train to become a powerful Templar weapon in the Assassin's Creed: Revelations multiplayer. And you'll have a wide variety of killers, modes, and maps to choose from. See them all spring to digital life in the ACR multiplayer trailer.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations is in development for Windows PCs, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The game is set for launch on consoles on November 15. The PC version is set to follow sometime in December.

Windows XP At 10: No Life Support

Published in Daily News Written by Widowmaker
A Microsoft official said the company has no plans to extend Windows XP's looming retirement date in order to give companies whose business systems run on the aging OS more time to migrate to a newer version of Windows--and that could be a problem for those who have yet to begin the transition.

"There's absolutely no chance" that Windows XP's April, 2014 end-of-life date, when Microsoft will end all support, will be extended, said Rich Reynolds, general manager for Windows Commercial marketing, in an interview.

Tribes: Ascend Beta Launches Nov 4th

Published in Daily News Written by Widowmaker
Hi-Rez Studios has finally set a launch date for the closed beta of its new free-to-play FPS, Tribes: Ascend. Those with beta keys will be able to strap on their jetpacks and start bouncing around on Friday, November 4th.

The announcement was made by Hi-Rez's Todd Harris during a lengthy 35-minute audio interview. He says gamers should not panic if they haven't received a beta confirmation email yet, as the selection process is still taking place.
"We have a date, you heard it here first. The team is working hard for closed beta to start on Friday, November 4th, so, a few weeks away. We plan on announcing that more broadly next week, and as you may have known if you've been following us, we wanted to start in September originally, that was kind of our original plan, but there were a few adjustments that we wanted to make before beta."
"Specifically, some things we've been working on are character progression elements, those were things that weren't in alpha, but will be in beta... and secondly, with the changes or improvements based on feedback from the alpha testing group... Disc jump strength was one, some challenge that people had in chasing down flag cappers which is a big part of the game, basically ability to quickly gain momentum from a standstill, and even overall speed of the game."

You can still apply for the Tribes: Ascend beta at the official website, although acceptance is not guaranteed. Todd says you can also get beta access via competitions or by pre-ordering a special "VIP starter pack" for the game. More information about this will be coming next week.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Will Have Always-On DRM

Published in Daily News Written by Widowmaker
It seems the Ukrainian developer of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise is following UbiSoft's lead when it comes to combating PC game piracy (and making gamers' lives that little bit more frustrating). GSC Game World studio head Sergey Grigorovich has revealed his team plans on implementing a fairly extreme form of digital rights management (DRM) for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, which forces players to download the game in small installments as they progress through the story.

The news comes via a recent interview, which quoted Grigorovich as saying the measures were a way of combating piracy:
"Protection from piracy? Part of the content will be located on the server and downloaded as the game progresses. Permanent internet access is required. Text information, code and quests will be loaded through that connection. Software piracy is an issue for us, we try to fight it, but within reason."
"If people can not afford a licensed version, it is to our advantage if they download a pirated copy, and then want to buy a license. In Ukraine, there are different products that people love so much that they buy a license in principle. We want to create just such a product."
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is yet to have an official release date.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Redemption Trailer

Published in Daily News Written by Widowmaker
While all eyes have been on EA's Battlefield 3 of late, Activision's FPS juggernaut is right around the corner, too, and the latest trailer indicates the publisher plans to pull out all the stops for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. See Makarov and Capt. Price go at it in the MW3 story trailer, Redemption.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is in development for Windows PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The game is set for launch on November 8.
With its relatively small Operation Metro map and lack of vehicles, the ongoing Battlefield 3 multiplayer beta doesn't quite feel like Battlefield. That all changes this afternoon. DICE has announced the massive 64-player, jet-filled Caspian Border map is now open to all PC beta testers.

Posting the news via an update on Battlelog, DICE said that the final weekend of the Battlefield 3 multiplayer beta will go out with a bang thanks to Caspian Border.
